Day Four in Iceland, Part 1
Woke up in Hofn, and went to Netto to restock on groceries. Found a 300 gram, $6 package of tofu. Yum? And a wall of dried fish options.
We stopped to look at the icebergs in the lagoon again. The day was rainy and grey, a perfect backdrop for the stark landscape and the blue water. Geometric power lines stretched into the distance. Seals drifted and dove between the bergs. Adolescent geese followed after their mama. Summer in Iceland!
Next we went to Skaftafell, a wilderness area in Vatnajökull National Park, to hike to Svartifoss, or Black Waterfall. The water cascades past columns of basalt. I love that I can see columnar basalt in the Gorge, and I can see it in Iceland, and they are both caused by same geologic process. When basaltic lava cools in a particular way, it cracks to make geometric columns. I love it!
The top of the hill was nearly bald and open to the elements. I included some photos of the flowers blooming up there. The season is so short, that this counts, reproductively, as spring. Babies and flowers everywhere!
On the hike, we also went by the remains of a thatch-roofed farm from the early 1900s. We could go inside. The roofs are made with beams of wood covered in pizza-sized stone shingles. Above that is about 8 inches of soil with grass growing on top.
Back at the visitor’s center, I documented a strange phenomenon. The bathroom is full of signs about putting toilet paper into the toilet, and not into the garbage. But the garbage is full of #1 and #2 soiled toilet paper. What is that about?
